Echinocereus klapperi is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet klapperi honors the German cactus lover Ingo Klapper.

description

Echinocereus klapperi has a branching growth and forms groups that often consist of more than 100 shoots and whose roots are fibrous. The green cylindrical shoots are up to 8 inches long and 3 inches in diameter. There are nine to ten low ribs . The three to four round, straight, protruding or spreading central spines are cream-colored to yellow and gray with age. They have lengths of 1 to 2.5 centimeters. The twelve to 15 needle-like, straight radial spines are spread out or lie on the shoot surface. They are also cream-colored to yellow, gray with age and are 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long.

The short tubular flowers are reddish and have a lighter throat. They are 5 to 7 inches long and 3.5 to 5 inches in diameter. The egg-shaped greenish-brown fruits tear open when ripe. They are 0.8 to 1.2 inches long and reach 0.9 to 1.1 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus klapperi is common in the Mexican state of Sonora near El Novillo .

The first description by Wolfgang Blum was published in 1998. Echinocereus klapperi belongs to another family member of Echinocereus schereri .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
