Echinocereus nicholii is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet nicholii honors the American biologist Andrew Alexander Nichol (1895–1961). English common names are "Golden Hedgehog" and "Nichol's Hedgehog Cactus".

description

Echinocereus nicholii forms branched, large, loose groups from the base, which consist of up to 30 shoots . The upright, cylindrical shoots are 30 to 60 centimeters long and 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter. There are ten to thirteen ribs that are not clearly humped. The strikingly long central spines are glassy white or clear golden yellow. The two to six central spines, rarely up to eleven, are straight and stiff. The lowest of them has a length of 5 to 6.2 centimeters. The eight to twelve (rarely up to 18) radial spines are spreading, straight and 0.8 to 1.2 inches long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are red to blood red. They appear in the upper half of the shoots, are 5 to 6.2 inches long and reach the same diameter. The egg-shaped initially green fruits later turn red and are covered with sloping thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus nicholii is found in the United States in the southeastern state of Arizona and in the Mexican state of Sonora .

The first description as Echinocereus engelmannii var. Nicholii by Lyman David Benson was published in 1944. Bruce Dale Parfitt placed the species in 1987 in the genus Echinocereus . The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinocereus nicholii subsp. nicholii
  • Echinocereus nicholii subsp. llanuraensis Rutow

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
