Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus rigidissimus is common in the southwest United States and northwest Mexico .

The first description as Cereus pectinatus var. Rigidissimus by George Engelmann was published in 1856. In a plant catalog of the Kakteen-Haage company , the species was placed in the genus Echinocereus in 1897 . Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocereus pectinatus var. Rigidissimus (Engelm.) Rümpler (1885), Echinocereus dasyacanthus var. Rigidissimus (Engelm.) WTMarshall (1941) and Echinocereus pectinatus f. rigidissimus (Engelm.) Krainz (1967).

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rigidissimus
  • Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rubispinus (G.Frank & ABLau) NPTaylor

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
