Live and act

Ferdinand Friedrich Haage was the first child and the eldest son of the Erfurt gardener August Christian Gustav Ferdinand Haage (1830–1921). His siblings were Marie (1860–1865), Carl Adolph (1861–1935), Fritz Eduard (1862–1862), Elise (1864–1865), Emmi (1865–1865), Max (1867–?), Paul Wilhelm ( 1868–?), Marie Emilie Therese (1869–1957), Martha (1872–1960) and Emma (1873–1962).

He completed his apprenticeship in the nursery his father moved to the gates of Erfurt in 1872. He then worked for some time at the Botanical Institute in London. With extensive horticultural knowledge and commercial experience, he returned to his hometown and in 1888 took over his father's economically troubled gardening business. Under Haage's direction, the nursery specialized more and more in the cultivation of cactus plants , succulents and seed cultivation . Around 1902/1903 Ferdinand Friedrich Haage relocated his business to Andreasflur 4, today Blumenstrasse, where the Kakteen-Haage nursery is still located.

Haage's plants have been seen at numerous large international garden shows and have received awards there. In 1904 he took part in the International Art and Horticultural Exhibition in Düsseldorf and in 1912 in the Royal International Horticultural Exhibition in London and exhibited in Saint Petersburg in 1899 and 1914 . In 1912 Joseph Nelson Rose visited the Haages nursery during his stay in Europe.

Haage was also known as a high cyclist . On June 16, 1886, he set a world record over ten kilometers with 18:47 minutes on the penny farthing, which lasted two years. His children were Friedrich Adolph (1891–1915), Elisabeth Margarethe (1894–1972) and Walther Max (1899–1992).
