Gymnocalycium paraguayense is a species of plant in the genus Gymnocalycium from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the distribution area in Paraguay .
description
Gymnocalycium paraguayense initially grows individually and later in groups with shiny green, initially flattened, later spherical shoots and reaches a diameter of 5 to 8 (-12) centimeters. The seven to twelve (rarely from 5) ribs are hardly conspicuous bumpy but divided by transverse furrows with a chin under the bump. The three to nine spread, straight to slightly curved, light brownish-yellow, later light graying thorns are up to 3.5 centimeters (rarely up to 6 centimeters) long.
The white dioecious flowers have a slightly purple-pink throat. They reach a length of up to 6 centimeters and have the same diameter. The 1 to 2 cm long pericarpel is green to olive-green and covered with lighter-edged scales that overflow slightly red at the tips. The style and stigma are white, the stamens pink or whitish and the pollen yellowish.
The green pear- to club-shaped fruits become soft as they ripen. The seeds are brown to black, 1 to 1.6 mm in size and oval.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Gymnocalycium paraguayense is distributed in Paraguay in the Paraguarí and Cordillera departments , as well as in the Chaco region at 150 to 300 m in partial shade.
It was first described as Echinocactus paraguayensis in 1903 by Karl Moritz Schumann . Carl Curt Hosseus placed the species in the genus Gymnocalycium in 1939 . The 1898 by Friedrich Ferdinand Haage described varieties Echinocactus denudatus var. Andersohnianus , Echinocactus denudatus var. Delaetianum , Echinocactus denudatus var. Heuschkelianus , Echinocactus denudatus var. Meiklejohnianus , Echinocactus denudatus var. Scheidelianus , Echinocactus denudatus var. Wagnerianus and Echinocactus denudatus var. Wieditziana apply as synonyms .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
