Echinocereus spinigemmatus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet spinigemmatus is derived from the Latin words spina for 'sting' or 'thorn' and gemmatus for 'have buds'. It refers to the thorny flower buds of the species.

description

Echinocereus spinigemmatus usually ramifies and forms loose groups consisting of seven to ten shoots . The green cylindrical shoots gradually taper towards their tips. They are up to 30 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 7 centimeters. There are ten to 14 ribs that are slightly humped. The two to four yellowish and protruding central spines are difficult to distinguish from the radial spines. They have lengths of 0.5 to 4 centimeters. The ten to 13 slender and yellowish radial spines are 0.3 to 2.3 inches long.

The funnel-shaped flowers are a little pink lilac to light purple. They appear near the shoot tips, are 4 to 5 inches long and reach a diameter of 5 to 6 inches. The green, egg-shaped fruits are heavily thorny.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus spinigemmatus is common in the Mexican states of Zacatecas and Jalisco .

The first description by Alfred Bernhard Lau was published in 1984.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
