Alfred Bernhard Lau

Alfred Bernhard Lau (born August 5, 1928 in Solingen ; † February 27, 2007 in Fortín de las Flores , Veracruz ) was a German missionary and cactus researcher. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " ABLau ".

Live and act

Alfred Lau began his training as a priest at the All Nations Bible College in England in 1947 . In 1952 he emigrated to the United States , where he taught eighth graders at the Coulter Academy in Los Angeles until 1955. In 1955 he married Anni Siemers, with whom he had seven children. Two years later the family moved to Córdoba in the Mexican state of Veracruz . In 1967 the Lau family finally settled in Fortín de las Flores .

In addition to his work as a priest, Lau was interested in plants, especially cacti and other succulents. To this end, he undertook research trips through North and South America and discovered many new species, of which he also made initial descriptions. For example:

In 1973 Lau became a member of the International Organization for Succulent Research . The Cactus and Succulent Society of America presented him with the CSSA Fellow Award on June 1, 1981 at their meeting in Albuquerque .
