Coryphantha tripugionacantha is a species of plant in the genus Coryphantha from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tripugionacantha is derived from the Latin words tri- for 'three', pugio for 'sword' and the Greek word akantha for 'thorn' and refers to the central spine of the species.

description

Coryphantha tripugionacantha usually grows individually. The spherical, initially blue-green and later cloudy green shoots reach heights of 7 to 9 centimeters with a diameter of 8 to 9 centimeters. The apex of the shoot is slightly depressed. The warts , up to 20 millimeters long, are flattened and more or less rounded. The axillae are initially covered with wool, but later they become bald. Nectar glands are absent. The three very strong central spines are gray and have a darker tip. They are curved inward, radiating and 1.8 to 2 inches long. The eight to nine unequal, 0.8 to 1 centimeter long radial spines are brownish gray, radiating and curved inward.

The creamy yellow flowers reach a diameter of 6 to 7 centimeters. The elongated opaque green fruits are juicy and have lengths of up to 3.5 centimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Coryphantha tripugionacantha is common on clay soil in the Mexican state of Zacatecas .

The first description by Alfred Bernhard Lau was published in 1988.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
