The name Fortín came about because at the end of the 18th century a fortress was built on that site to protect the transport route over the Río Metlac . The second part of the name (added later) dates back to the late 19th century when Antonio Polanco introduced flower growing here on a commercial basis. Fortín floriculture is known nationally and internationally.

By decree of July 1930, the municipality of Fortín was founded in the immediate vicinity of the municipalities of Córdoba and Ixtaczoquitlán .

With a decree of July 15, 1955, the village of Fortín was raised to the rank of a small town (villa) and renamed Fortín de las Flores .

On November 12, 1959 Fortín de las Flores received city rights (it was classified as Ciudad).
