Echinocereus laui is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet laui honors Alfred Bernhard Lau , the discoverer of the species.

description

Echinocereus laui grows branching from the base and forms groups with up to 20 shoots , which are largely covered by the thorns. With a diameter of 4 centimeters, the cylindrical shoots reach heights of up to 10 centimeters. There are 14 to 16 low ribs that are divided into small humps. The four protruding or spreading, reddish-brown central spines are up to 3 inches long. The 18 to 21 bristle-like white radial spines have a length of 5 to 10 millimeters.

The narrow, funnel-shaped flowers are pink and appear near the shoot tips. They are 3 to 6.2 inches long and 4 to 7.2 inches in diameter. The spherical, brownish green fruits are covered with wool and thin, brown thorns.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus laui is distributed in Mexico in the east of the state of Sonora and in the state of Chihuahua on the west side of the Sierra Madre Occidental in oak forest. It was first described in 1978 by Gerhard RW Frank .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
