description

Epiphyllum laui grows both epiphytically and lithophytically . The shoots branch out basally or laterally and are 1 to 2 centimeters narrow and cylindrical at the base with a diameter of 0.6 to 0.9 centimeters. Above that, the soft-fleshed shoots are flattened, linear and 5 to 7 centimeters wide. They are bright green and have a protruding central rib. Their edges are lobed and wavy. The hair-like, brownish-yellow 1 to 5 thorns on the shoots  are 3 to 5 millimeters long.

The funnel-shaped flowers open in the evening and stay open for at least two days. They reach a length of 15 to 16 centimeters and a diameter of 14 to 16 centimeters. The outer bracts are reddish orange to yellow, the inner bracts are white with a yellowish tinge. The carmine-red fruits are elongated and 4 to 8 inches long.
