Klunzinger , 1879

Echinophyllia is a genus of hard corals found in the Red Sea and the tropical Indo-Pacific , north to Japan and east to the south-central Pacific. The species of this genus live in the moderate current on the lower reef slopes.

features

The growth form of their rather delicate and often fragile colonies is plate, rosette or crust-shaped. They are often only attached to the subsurface with the center of the colony. The surface of the colony appears prickly. The corallites are tubular. Often a central coralite is clearly visible, the other coralites are then called radial coralites.

The corals feed mainly with the help of their symbiotic zooxanthellae . The color varies and can be gray-blue, green, yellow, brown, or purple.

Systematics

In the traditional stony coral classification, Echinophyllia is placed in the current polyphyletic family of Mussidae . Molecular studies have shown that the traditional systematics, which was based primarily on features of skeletal morphology, did not correspond to the actual relationship. In 2012, the family Lobophylliidae was reorganized for the kinship group ("Kladen XVIII to XX" of the molecular studies).
