Echinopsis × imperialis is a hybrid of the species Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). It is a garden hybrid which is believed to be the result of a cross between Echinopsis eyriesii and a columnar species of the genus. The epithet imperialis comes from Latin and means 'imperial'.
description
Echinopsis × imperialis grows columnar and is not branched. The matt dark green shoots have a diameter of 9 to 12 centimeters and a height of 60 to 80 centimeters. There are about 16 vertical ribs that are deeply winged and slightly notched. Five to eight gray to gray-brown or horn-brown thorns arise from the areoles . The thorns are 1 to 1.5 inches long. Occasionally one of them is sturdier and up to 3 centimeters in length.
The whitish pink flowers appear on the upper parts of the shoots. They reach a length of about 11 centimeters and have a diameter of 5 centimeters.
Distribution and systematics
Echinopsis × imperialis is only known in culture.
The first description by Robert W. Poindexter was published in 1935.
