Echinopsis korethroides is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet korethroides is derived from the Greek words korethron for 'broom' and -oides for 'resemble' and refers to the broom-like thorns of the species.

description

Echinopsis korethroides initially grows individually and later forms groups. The spherical to elongated, cloudy to shiny green shoots have a diameter of up to 30 centimeters. There are more than 20 tubercular ribs . The areoles on them are whitish. The four piercing, yellowish to reddish brown central spines are sometimes banded and flattened. The twelve to 20 unequal whitish to yellowish, needle-like radial spines are pointed darker. They are up to 3 inches long

The bell-shaped to funnel-shaped, intense red flowers appear on the shoot shoulder. They are up to 7 centimeters long and 4.5 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis korethroides is common in the Argentine provinces of Jujuy and Salta at altitudes of 3000 to 4000 meters.

The first description by Erich Werdermann was published in 1931.

Nomenclatory synonyms are Eriosyce korethroides (Werderm.) Backeb. (1936), Soehrensia korethroides (Werderm.) Backeb. (1951), Lobivia korethroides (Werderm.) Y.Itô (1952), Trichocereus korethroides (Werderm.) F.Ritter (1980) and Echinopsis formosa subsp. korethroides (Backeb.) Lowry (2002).
