Echinopsis saltensis is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet saltensis refers to the occurrence of the species in the Argentine province of Salta .

description

Echinopsis saltensis usually grows individually and only sometimes forms cushions. A large taproot is formed. The spherical to short cylindrical, light green shoots reach a diameter of up to 9 centimeters. There are 17 to 18 low ribs that are flat tubercles. The areoles on them are close together. The one to four strong central spines are usually hooked and 1 to 1.2 centimeters long. The twelve to 14 radial spines are thinner than the central spines. They have a length of up to 6 millimeters.

The funnel-shaped, red flowers have a darker throat. They appear on the side of the shoots and open during the day. The flowers are up to 4 inches long. The spherical fruits are drying up and have a diameter of up to 5 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis saltensis is distributed in the Argentine province of Salta at altitudes of 2000 to 3000 meters.

The first description by Carlos Luis Spegazzini was published in 1905.
