Echinopsis sanguiniflora is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet sanguiniflora is derived from the Latin words sanguinis for 'blood' and -florus for 'bloody' and refers to the flower color of the species.

description

Echinopsis sanguiniflora usually grows solitary with a thick taproot . The flattened spherical to spherical, light to dark green shoots reach heights of growth of up to 10 centimeters and the same diameter. There are 18 spirally arranged ribs that are notched at an angle. The initially dark and occasionally reddish thorns at the lower end turn gray with age. Several central spines are formed, which are often crossed. They are hooked or strongly curved. At least one of the central spines is up to three inches long. The ten or so radial spines lie on the shoot surface or are radiating. They have a length of 0.8 to 1.5 centimeters.

The blood-red flowers often have a whitish throat. They are up to 2 inches long.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis sanguiniflora is widespread in the Argentine province of Salta at altitudes of 2500 to 3000 meters.

The first description as Lobivia sanguiniflora by Curt Backeberg was published in 1936. David Richard Hunt placed the species in 1991 in the genus Echinopsis .

The following taxa are synonymous with the species: Lobivia breviflora Backeb. (1936), Lobivia sanguiniflora var. Breviflora (Backeb.) Rausch (1976), Echinopsis breviflora (Backeb.) M. Lowry (2003), Lobivia duursmaiana Backeb. (1936), Lobivia sanguiniflora var. Duursmaiana (Backeb.) Rausch (1976), Lobivia polycephala Backeb. (1936), Lobivia sanguiniflora var. Polycephala (Backeb.) Ullmann (1992) and Lobivia sanguiniflora var. Pseudolateritia Backeb. (1957).
