Echinopsis smrziana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet smrziana honors the Czech gardener and cactus lover Oskar Smrz (1885–1938).

description

Echinopsis smrziana grows individually or often forms posters with heights of up to 0.5 meters and diameters of up to 1.5 meters. The spherical to short cylindrical or even columnar, fresh green to gray-green shoots are often prostrate at first and later become erect. They are up to 40 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 20 centimeters. There are eleven to thirteen broad ribs . The seven to 14 unequal whitish to golden brown thorns are quite variable. They are thin, piercing, radiating and needle-like to bristly. The mostly single central spine is up to 3 centimeters long. The radial spines have a length of 1 to 2.5 centimeters.

The white flowers appear near the apex of the shoot. They are 13 to 17 inches long. The spherical, green-yellow fruits are very juicy and tear open vertically. They reach a diameter of 2.5 to 4 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Echinopsis smrziana is widespread in the Argentine province of Salta in middle altitudes from 1500 to 2500 meters.

The first description by Curt Backeberg was published in 1936.

Nomenclatory synonyms are Soehrensia smrziana (Backeb.) Backeb. (1959) and Trichocereus smrzianus (Backeb.) Backeb. (1966).
