The Echinorhynchidae are a family within the palaeacanthocephala , which belong to the scratchworms , which fish as adults in sea and fresh water as well as live in amphibians and reptiles and cause acanthocephalosis in these .

features

The representatives of the genus Echinorhynchidae are small to medium-sized species of scratchworms, which, as the most striking feature, have no spines on the trunk. The proboscis ( proboscis ) is more or less cylindrical to egg or club-shaped. The lacunae system of the tegument is very well developed and has two main lateral channels. The two lemiski, cones of the syncytial tegument protruding into the trunk , are only short or tongue-shaped. The testicles of the males are oval, they also have 6 to 8 cement glands at the rear end of the trunk. The eggs can be oval or spindle-shaped.

Way of life

The species of Echinorhynchidae live as adults as an intestinal parasite in marine and freshwater fish as well as in amphibians and reptiles. Small crustaceans such as amphipods or aquatic woodlice act as intermediate hosts .

Taxonomy

The best-known genera of the Echinorhynchidae are Echinorhynchus and Acanthocephalus with numerous species that are also relevant as parasites of domestic and farm animals. These are classified together with the genera Pseudoacanthocephalus and Pilus in the subfamily Echinorhynchinae. These are the Yamaguitisentinae with Yamaguitisentis as the only genus.
