Echternach masters

Binding of the Codex aureus Epternacensis , the Gospels of Echternach, with the ivory tablet of Christ in the middle

An early Romanesque ivory carver who worked in the early 10th century is known as the Echternach master . He probably created the ivory panel of the binding of the Gospel of Echternach in a monastery workshop .

His work is an example of how, under the rule of the Ottonians, art broke away from the late antique Roman models preferred in the Carolingian period and developed an independent, stricter, simpler direction under the influence of Byzantine formal language. With this change in style, the carving artists such as the Echternach masters orientate themselves on the illumination of their time. B. the miniatures of the Reichenau school or then those of the Echternach painting school itself.
