The Ecological Research Network (Ecornet) is a network of non-university, non-profit institutes for environmental and sustainability research in Germany. The aim of the network, founded in 2011, is to help shape social change in the direction of sustainability and to give it a scientific basis.
Topics and methods
Research in the Ecornet institutes is structured along topics such as consumption, climate, energy, biodiversity, mobility and resources, including water and land use. The institutes work on the individual topics in an interdisciplinary , application-oriented and socially oriented manner . They see themselves as the “critical counterpart to the strongly disciplinary research landscape and the established policy advice, combined with an explicit design requirement”. All Ecornet institutes share the consistent transdisciplinary research approach, in which actors from politics, civil society and business are involved in the research process from the start. Several of the Ecornet institutes in Germany took on a pioneering role in the consistent application of transdisciplinary methods in science. The Institute for Social-Ecological Research is also working on this research approach in its own theoretical research focus. The institutes place a significant emphasis on socio-ecological research . In this context, socio-ecological means an orientation towards serious social sustainability problems and a link between sociological, economic and ecological perspectives. Other theoretical approaches and methods include: transformative science, real laboratory research, sustainability assessment, technology assessment, participatory future research. In addition to research, Ecornet institutes are active to varying degrees in policy advice and environmental education.
