Ed Nuccilli

Edward C. "Ed" Nuccilli (born March 11, 1925 in Detroit , † April 23, 2011 in Southfield , Illinois ) was an American jazz trumpeter , arranger , composer and big band leader .

Nuccilli was the youngest son of an immigrant trumpeter of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from Italy . He learned to play the trumpet at the age of twelve under the guidance of his father and attended Cass Tech High School . He began his musical career in the 1940s in touring bands such as Eddie Marshall, for whom he also wrote arrangements. After completing military service in Africa during World War II, he toured in the bands of Shorty Sherock and Bobby Sherwood ; During this time he wrote the first compositions for big band. In 1949 he moved back to Detroit; to support his young family, he temporarily left the music business and worked for the Ford Motor Company until the mid-1950s , later as an insurance agent. In the 1960s he returned to the music industry, first forming a Latin band and playing in the house band of Elmwood Casino in Windsor, Ontario . In the early 1970s he wrote arrangements for artists of the Motown label, such as Smokey Robinson and the formation The Impact Of Brass ( Down at the Brass Works , 1971). He was a session musician on recordings of Philippé Wynne ( Starting All Over , 1977) and Sheila Landis and Her Bandits Of Bebop ( Guess I'll Call It Love , 1981). In the early 1970s he also founded the big band Plural Circle , for which he arranged and which made regular guest appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival , the Michigan Jazz Festival and in local clubs and recorded an album in 2006.
