Edward "Eddie" Bernard Collins (born January 30, 1883 in Atlantic City , New Jersey , † September 2, 1940 in Arcadia , California ) was an American actor.

life and career

Eddie Collins began his acting career on vaudeville stages, where he mostly performed comedic appearances. It was only relatively late, at the age of over 50, that he came to film. Up until his death, he appeared in a total of 25 films, often as a funny owl or sidekick of the main character. In Walt Disney's classic film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) he was the model and voice for the dwarf Dopey (in the German version: Seppl ). Dopey was a silent role with no lyrics, but the voiced Collins provided the noise. He also made the noises for the squirrels in the film.

In feature films, Collins is remembered for his appearances in two Charlie Chan crime films . In 1939 he took on substantial supporting roles in the John Ford films The Young Mr. Lincoln and Drumming on the Mohawk , each as a kind of comic sidekick to Henry Fonda's main character. Collins played one of his last roles in 1940, opposite Shirley Temple in The Blue Bird, as the dog Tylo, who is magically transformed into a human. His film career, which had only just gained momentum, was ended by his unexpected death in September 1940 of a heart attack. He was 57 years old. From 1921 until his death, Collins was married to actress Florence Wilmot.
