Ede Tóth (born October 14, 1844 in Putnok , Habsburg Monarchy , † February 26, 1876 in Budapest , Austria-Hungary ) was a Hungarian playwright and poet .

Life

Ede Tóth was born one of five children to a tailor. He attended school in Spišská Nová Ves and his father then sent him to a business school. He then worked for three years in a mixed goods store in Putnok before finally finding work in Budapest. With the help of his parents he was given the opportunity to study in Sárospatak , where he began to write his first poems. In 1871 he married the actress Veronika Benedek. With the death of his father he returned to Putnok with his wife and devoted himself more to writing. His drama A falu rossza , which is mainly based on his autobiographical experiences in Putnok, was selected for the world premiere in 1874 by the National Theater in Budapest. His drama Toloncz , published in 1876, was also performed by the National Theater.

On February 26, 1876, Tóth died at the age of 31 of complications from tuberculosis while he was in Budapest. He is buried in the Kerepesi temető cemetery. In his honor, the writer István Tamás, also from Putnok, founded the Ede Tóth literary circle in 2000, which has been meeting annually in Putnok since then. Tóth's dramas are still played in Hungarian theaters to this day. With the advent of Hungarian film , all of its plays were filmed at the beginning of the 20th century.
