Eden Castle is a ruined castle near Banff in the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire .

The castle was designed as a tower house with a Z-shaped floor plan. It was made of quarry stone and had a ground floor with vaulted ceilings and two floors above. It had towers on the southwest and northeast corners of the main block. In the inner corner that the south-west tower forms with the main building is the entrance with a round arch. The basement was divided into two rooms connected by a corridor. A staircase in the southeast corner of the southern room led up to the knight's hall on the first floor of the main block. The entire ground floor is equipped with loopholes .

history

The Meldrum family had the castle built in the second half of the 16th century. In 1676/1677, George Leslie, 4th Earl of Rothes , had renovations carried out and extensions added. The date 1677 is engraved on one of the upper windows on the south facade. From 1712 the castle belonged to William Duff, 1st Earl of Fife .

today

Today, Eden Castle is a ruin, the southeast tower of which is still about 13 meters high and the northern part of which has been completely demolished. The foundations of the northeast tower are integrated into a field wall. The ruin is a Scheduled Monument .
