The Eder & Heyland s Brewery is a brewery based in Großostheim ( Aschaffenburg district ) .

history

The Eder brewery was first mentioned in 1779. In 1979 the Großostheimer Schwanenbrauerei was integrated into the company. In 1983 the long-established Aschaffenburg Bavaria brewery joined the company. In 1991 the castle brewery in Thüngen was added. In 1998 the Eder Brewery and Heylands Brewery merged to form the new Eder & Heylands Brewery.

The brewery offers beers of the brands Eder's , Bavaria , Heylands and Schlappeseppel . Schlappeseppel is the name of an inn in Aschaffenburg and the brewery that was located there until 1975 .

The Schlappeseppel brewery was founded in 1803. The story (also on the back label of the Schlappeseppel-Export beer bottle) that the brewery was founded by a soldier in 1631 must be referred to the realm of legends. In 1975 the brewing business ended and in 1978 the trademark rights were sold to the Heylands brewery in Aschaffenburg. With the sale of Heylands, the brand first became the property of the März Group , then Henninger , Dietmar Hopp and, from 1998, Eder & Heylands. The Gasthaus Brauerei Schlappeseppel continued to operate under this name, but now serves beer from the Faust brewery .

The Schlappeseppel brand is the top-selling of the company's four brands and generates half of sales. With the purchase by Eder & Heylands, sales and brand awareness increased significantly. The use of swing top bottles for the Schlappeseppel Special (the so-called "Seppelchen") also contributed to this.

Beer production in 2009 was 300,000 hecto liters (compared to 1986 700 000 hl).

Trivia

  • Once a year, usually in April, a brewery festival takes place over a weekend on the brewery premises and in a hall that has been redecorated into a Bavarian festival tent.
  • After a 33-year beer supply contract with Heylands expired on October 1, 2011 , the owner of the traditional Schlappeseppel inn in Aschaffenburg decided to serve beer from the Faust brewery in Miltenberg, which was founded in 1654 . In the early 1990s he tried to have the contract annulled by a court. However, the name of the inn remained unchanged. Several thousand people protested against the change in the Facebook user group "Against the serving of Faust beer in the Schlappeseppel brewery restaurant".
  • The Schlappeseppel beer coasters were drawn by the cartoonists Greser & Lenz . There are now over 60 different caricatures. The beer coasters have become collector's motifs.
