Edgar Barrier

Edgar Barrier (born March 4, 1907 in New York City , † June 20, 1964 in Hollywood , California ) was an American actor .

life and career

After attending Columbia University , Edgar Barrier turned to acting. In the 1930s he appeared in a number of plays on Broadway , including Maxwell Anderson's Mary of Scotland and Robert E. Sherwood's Idiot’s Delight . Barrier also became a member of Orson Welles’s Mercury Theater , performing both stage and radio productions for the legendary ensemble. In the radio series The Saint he lent his voice to the hero Simon Templar as one of several actors .

In the 1940s, Barrier moved to Hollywood, where the beard was often used in costume films or adventure flicks. Mostly he appeared as a villain in supporting roles. In 1943 he appeared in Phantom of the Opera alongside Claude Rains and Nelson Eddy as police officer Raoul Dubert . Barrier worked again with Welles in the films Chased by Agents (1943) and Macbeth - The Kingslayer (1948). In particular, his role in Macbeth as the murdered Banquo , who later appears as a ghost, is considered a high point of his film career. He took on another prominent film role in 1945 as a murderous aristocrat in A Game of Death , a remake of Graf Zaroff - Genie des Evil . From the 1950s, Barrier was also seen in numerous US television series, but the quality of his film offerings deteriorated significantly during this time. Most recently, he was a guest actor on the television series 77 Sunset Strip in the year he died .

Edgar Barrier died of a heart attack in June 1964 at the age of 57 and was buried in Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery .
