Too Much Johnson is an American comedy film from the year 1938 . The silent film , directed by Orson Welles , is said to have been shot in connection with his stage adaptation of the William Gillette play for the Mercury Theater . Accordingly, three short films were planned, each to be shown as a prologue before each act. Joseph Cotten took over the leading role , several members of the Mercury Theater also appeared. The play premiered on August 16, 1938 - but without the film. For a long time Too Much Johnson was considered missing; it was not until 2008 that a copy of the film was discovered in a warehouse in Pordenone, Italy. After a restoration, it premiered on October 9, 2013 at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival .
action
Lawyer Augustus Billings has an affair with a married woman, Clairette Dathis, but her husband Leon finds out about the matter. Augustus flees to Cuba, but Leon Dathis is hot on his heels.
Production and shooting
Filming took about ten days, resulting in a film length of approximately 25,000 feet (7620 meters).
Orson Welles made this film as an experiment in using film as part of a stage production. The film was not shown at the time, presumably because Paramount had owned the film rights to the play for several years.
