Edgardo Mondolfi

Edgardo Mondolfi Otero (born May 15, 1918 in Caracas , Venezuela , † November 7, 1999 ibid) was a Venezuelan zoologist and ecologist with a focus on mammals .

Mondolfi was a professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and was particularly committed to the research and protection of the South American mammal fauna. He was the author of numerous scientific articles and books, including a monograph on the jaguar with Rafael Hoogesteijn . In addition, he was the first to describe several mammal species and subspecies, of which the following are considered valid:

The zoologists Daniel Lew , Roger Pérez Hernández and the Spaniard Jacint Ventura , who also live in Venezuela, named the four- eyed rat Philander mondolfii after Edgardo Mondolfi in 2006 .

In later years, Mondolfi was Venezuela's extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador to Tanzania and Kenya. He died on November 7, 1999 of dengue fever .
