Edith Evanson
Edith Evanson (born April 28, 1896 in Tacoma , Washington , † November 29, 1980 in County Riverside , California ) was an American actress.
life and career
Edith Everson was born the daughter of a Protestant pastor with English and German roots. She found her first job as a stenographer at the court. She appeared in several plays during her high school years and later played with various theater groups. But she did not make her first film until 1940, at the age of 44. She had one of her first roles as a nurse to old Jedediah Leland in Citizen Kane . She often played somewhat quirky but kind-hearted women of advanced age. Edith Evanson has appeared alongside great actors such as Greer Garson , Joan Crawford , James Stewart and Spencer Tracy throughout her career . She played especially often in supporting roles housekeepers, secretaries or aunts.
Perhaps Evanson's best-known role was Mrs. Wilson, the housekeeper of the two killers, in Alfred Hitchcock's 1948 thriller Cocktail for a Corpse. Sixteen years later, another collaboration with Hitchcock followed in Marnie , where Evanson had a minor role as a cleaning lady. She took on another noteworthy job as Aunt Sigrid in the drama Mystery of the Mother at Irene Dunne's side . Edith Evanson also had guest roles in television series such as Lassie and Alfred Hitchcock Presents from the 1950s . Director George Cukor got Evanson to practice the Swedish accent with Marilyn Monroe for her film Something's Got to Give . They practiced together for several months to a few days before Monroe's death.
In the 1960s and 1970s, she increasingly withdrew from the acting business. By 1974 Everson was involved in a total of around 120 film and television productions. She died in 1980 at the age of 84. Since she had no immediate family when she died and was never married, she bequeathed her fortune to the Protestant Church and the Democrats , of whom she was a lifelong supporter.
