The publishing house Edition Orient in 1980 on the initiative of the translator Nagi Naguib founded (1931-1987) in Berlin. The main objective of the publishing house is to make modern oriental literature known to adults and children in German translations.

history

The Edition Orient was later led by Dietlind Schack, from 1997 together with Stephan Trudewind and in 1999 alone by Stephan Trudewind. Dietlind Schack stood by the publisher in an advisory capacity until her death in 2011. The publishing house moved from Berlin to Meerbusch and in 1997 back to Berlin.

One focus of the publisher's program is fiction from Arabic . You can find poetry by well-known poets such as Adonis and prose by important authors such as Taha Hussein , Mohammed Dib and Alifa Rifaat . The houseboat on the Nile , one of the main works by the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature , the Egyptian Nagib Mahfuz , was published in 1982 in German by Edition Orient.

The series of bilingual Arabic-German editions of works by important Arabic authors such as Salah Abd As-Sabur, Ghassan Kanafani , Sargon Boulus and Suleman Taufiq should be emphasized .

A special feature are the series of bilingual, predominantly Arabic-German, Persian-German and Turkish-German children's books by authors and illustrators such as Aytül Akal, Farideh Chalatbarie, Ihab Schakir, Walid Taher and Rania Zaghir. Bilingual children's books are also published in many other languages, each with German.

In addition to modernity, there are also classics such as a bilingual Persian-German edition of poetry by the famous mystic Omar Chayyām edited by Khosro Naghed , anecdotes from Turkish about Nasreddin Hodscha , the translation of the Gilgamesh epic by Wolfram von Soden with illustrations by Hajo Edelhausen and a series of illustrated folk tales .

The publisher's profile was expanded in 2015 with the publication of the Mexican picture book Migrar with illustrations by Javier Martínez Pedro .

The publisher is a member of the German Book Trade Association .
