Crystal Reports is software for creating reports. With Crystal Reports information from databases or text files can be retrieved, processed and presented in the form of graphics and tables . A distribution of reports about Web technologies is using Crystal Reports Server, Business Objects Enterprise or Eclipse / Java - or .NET - runtime environments possible.

Crystal Reports was originally developed by Crystal Services , founded in Vancouver , B.C. , Canada in 1984 . The software quickly gained wide adoption through its partnership with Microsoft . In 1994, Crystal Services was acquired by Seagate Technology and renamed Seagate Software. In 2000 the company was renamed Crystal Decisions . In 2003, Crystal Reports was taken over by Business Objects and subsequently further developed. At the beginning of 2008, Business Objects was taken over by SAP .

SAP has released a heavily revised version of Crystal Reports called Crystal Reports for Enterprise (hereinafter referred to as CR4E for short). In contrast to conventional Crystal Reports, CR4E 4.0 does not support any other data connections (e.g. to databases) apart from “universes”. According to SAP, there is currently no migration strategy from Crystal Reports to CR4E; the current recommendation is “Stay with CR2011 for now”.

The rest of this article applies to Crystal Reports, not CR4E.

Report design method

Users install Crystal Reports Designer software on the PC and use it to display certain data elements from tables from the data sources listed below. For the transfer of this data, Crystal Reports either provides appropriate specific driver software or data is transferred from the source systems in the ODBC , JDBC or OLAP standards . When a report has been completed, it is usually saved in its own RPT format. In this form, it can be called up at any time and receives the latest data from the source systems. If the databases of the source systems are changed, the reports created with Crystal Reports change automatically. The reports can either be viewed on the screen, exported in various formats or printed out (see “Output options”). The reports produced can consist of simple columns with values, graphs, or crosstabs. It is possible to include subreports in a main report. In addition, Crystal Reports (from version 2008) offers the possibility of using Flash files. There are numerous options for changing the appearance or graphics of the reports and for formatting them, as well as adding graphic labels and images in various image formats.
