Edmilsa Governo

Edmilsa Luciano Governo (born February 28, 1998 in Maputo , Mozambique ) is a Mozambican athlete. Governo is considered one of the best athletes in her country in her discipline due to her numerous medal successes.

Governo has been training since he was seven years old. She has suffered from partial visual impairment since birth and can only see up to 50 meters. She complained about bullying at her school. Since 2012 she has been training for the sports club Clube de Desportos Matchedje de Maputo . Since 2014 she has attended the business school in Maputo , where she studies accounting.

At the Jogos da CPLP 2012 in Mafra ( Portugal ), Governo won three gold medals in the 100, 200 and 400 meter disciplines. At the 2015 World Athletics Championships for the disabled in Doha, she won the bronze medal over 400 meters (T12) with a time of 58.68 s.

In 2016, Edmilsa Governo was the only Mozambican athlete to take part in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, for which she received a scholarship from the Brazilian company Odebrecht . She competed in both the 100-meter (T12) and 400-meter (T12) disciplines. She qualified for the Games in March 2016 at the “Meeting” in Tunis (Tunisia). In the first discipline she was eliminated in the semifinals (3rd place) with a time of 12.35 s. In the sprint over 400 meters (T12), she won the bronze medal in the final with a time of 53.89 s, setting a new African record at the same time. Governo won the first ever Paralympic medal for their country.
