Edmund Mach (Author)
Edmund Mach , pseudonyms Otto and Aloisius Schnedel (born October 3, 1929 in Vienna , Austria ; † October 9, 1996 in New York , USA) was a schizophrenic Austrian poet and tennis teacher . Together with Ernst Herbeck , he was one of two language artists in the "House of Artists" in the Lower Austrian Provincial Psychiatric Clinic in Gugging .
Life
Edmund Mach came from a simple background and was an only child. From 1935 to 1939 he attended elementary school. In the same year the family moved to Gugging. In 1948 he graduated from high school and from 1948 to 1952 he studied English and history (teaching position) in Vienna, but dropped out after 6 semesters. From then on he worked as a sports and tennis instructor and was also a professional tennis player himself. At the age of 27, due to a threat of violence, in 1956, he came to the Gugging State Hospital and other facilities for the first time, until he was permanently housed in Gugging from 1984 due to latent schizophrenia . There he also worked in the House of Artists , next to Ernst Herbeck the only poet in this building, which is otherwise inhabited by visual artists. He was a patient during the tenure of the well-known psychiatrist Leo Navratil .
In 1996 his greatest wish came true and he was able to visit the USA, which he loved so much: the trip lasted one week, from October 3, 1996 to October 9, 1996. He visited New York and St. Louis . Finally, in New York, the poet died in his sleep on October 9, 1996.
