Life

After Gill moved to Ludlow , Shropshire with his father, who was also a painter , he discovered landscape painting for himself , stimulated by the picturesque surroundings of the place . He later went to London and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts .

From 1842 Gill was represented with his works at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy. His numerous watercolors and oil paintings mostly show scenes from the English , Welsh and Scottish mountain regions, whereby he developed a particular preference for river views with waterfalls. Artistically he was influenced by David Cox , with whom he met in Birmingham in 1841 .
