Eduard Ellis van Raalte (born April 30, 1841 in The Hague ; † March 23, 1921 ibid) was a Dutch lawyer and politician of the Liberale Unie (LU) and the Vrijzinnig-Democratische Bond (VDB), the member and chairman of the faction of LU was in the Second Chamber of the States General . He was Minister of Justice in the De Meester cabinet between 1905 and 1908 and introduced the Employment Contract Act during this period. In 1907 he was murdered by a mentally ill person.

Life

Edward Ellis van Raalte, son of a Jewish lawyer was also active as a lawyer and served from April 1, 1892 to September 23, 1897 as Assistant Secretary ( Wethouder ) of Finance of Rotterdam . On September 21, 1897 he became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal) for the first time for the Liberale Unie (LU) and represented the constituency of Rotterdam V with a brief interruption until August 17, 1905 . He joined the faction of the Free Democrats (Vrijzinnig-Democratische Kamerclub) from September 1897 to March 1901 . On December 30, 1898, he was also a member of the examination committee for the exams for consular candidates and vice-consuls. At the same time he held the post of Rijksadvocaat of Rotterdam between November 1, 1903 and August 17, 1905 .

On August 17, 1905, van Raalte was appointed Minister of Justice (Minister van Justitie) in the De Meester cabinet and held this ministerial office until February 12, 1908. During this time he introduced the Employment Contract Act. This Wet op het arbeidscontract , which only concerned workers, was based on economic inequality between employers and workers and therefore imposed obligations on the employer. In the event of illness or an accident, the employer had to continue to pay wages, protect the employee from endangering the body, respectability and property and prevent forced business activity. Both the employer and the employee had to observe a notice period when the contract was terminated. In 1907 he was murdered by a mentally ill person.

After Eduard Ellis van Raalte resigned from the Vrijzinnig-Democratische Bond (VDB) in May 1909 , he became a member of the Liberal Unie again in 1910 and, on September 16, 1913, was again a member of the Second Chamber of the States General. He represented the constituency of Middelburg until September 17, 1918 and was a member of the central department of the Second Chamber from September to November 1916 and again between July 1917 and January 1918. He also served between April 24, 1917 and September 17, 1918 as chairman of the LU parliamentary group in the Second Chamber. He was also involved between March 1917 and 1920 as chairman of the advisory committee for the law on ship claims (Schepenvorderingswet) .
