Eduard Feireisl (born December 16, 1957 in Kladno ) is a Czech mathematician .

Feireisl studied mathematics at the Charles University in Prague from 1977 , graduated there in 1982 and received his doctorate in 1986 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences under Vladimír Lovicar (Critical points of non-differentiable functionals: Existence of solutions to problems of the mathematical elasticity theory ( Czech)). He stayed at the Institute for Mathematics (member from 1988), completed his habilitation in 1999, became a lecturer at the Charles University in 2009 and was given a full professorship in 2011.

In 1989 he spent six months in Oxford, in 1993/94 for a sabbatical year at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid , in 1998 and 1999 for six months each at the University of Franche-Comté in Besancon, and also visiting scholar at the University of Henri Poincaré in Nancy, at Ohio State University, 2004/05 at the Technical University of Munich and from 2008 to 2010 visiting professor at the Central European University in Budapest. From 2018 he is an Einstein Fellow at the TU Berlin. In 2012 he was at the Erwin Schrödinger Institute in Vienna.

He deals with partial differential equations, infinitely dimensional dynamic systems and mathematical problems of hydrodynamics.

In 2004 and 2009 he received the Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, in 2017 the Gold Medal of Charles University, in the same year the Bernhard Bolzano Medal and in 2015 the Neuron Award. In 2012 he chaired the scientific committee of the European Congress of Mathematicians in Krakow. He was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing in 2002 ( The dynamical systems approach to the equations of a linearly viscous compressible barotropic fluid ) and in 2018 in the Fields Medal Committee. In 2013 he received an ERC Advanced Grant.
