Dafermos studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens with a diploma in 1964 and received his doctorate in mechanics under Jerald L. Ericksen at Johns Hopkins University in 1967 (On the existence and the asymptotic stability of solutions to the equations of linear thermoelasticity). In 1968 he became an assistant professor at Cornell University and an associate professor in 1971 and a professor of applied mathematics in 1975 at Brown University . From 1988 to 1993 and 2006/07 he was director of the Lefschetz Center of Dynamical Systems. He is an alumni-alumnae professor at Brown University.

Most recently he has dealt with the spontaneous generation of shock waves in nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws and the interplay between thermodynamics and analysis in these systems, especially the stabilizing role of entropy.

In 2012 he became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He holds honorary doctorates from the National Technical University of Athens, the University of Athens and the University of Crete . From 2004 he was an honorary professor at the Academia Sinica. Since 1988 he has been a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens , since 2011 external member of the Accademia dei Lincei , whose Cataldo e Angiola Agostinelli Prize he received in 2011, and since 2001 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1975 to 1977 he was treasurer of the Society of Natural Philosophy. In 2016 he received the Norbert Wiener Prize for Applied Mathematics and he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .

From 1995 he was on the Board of Governors of the Weizmann Institute .

He is a US citizen.
