Eduard Feodor Gloeckner (born April 13, 1812 in Borna ; † February 22, 1885 in Dresden ) was a lawyer and honorary citizen of Wittenberg .

Life

Eduard Feodor Gloeckner was born on April 13, 1812 in Borna in the Kingdom of Saxony . After studying law, he was a lawyer and notary in Dresden . By moving to Wittenberg, he became a royal counselor.

As early as 1850, the Inner Mission planned to build a children's home in Wittenberg to protect the youth from neglect. Gloeckner supported this endeavor and founded a so-called boy rescue house on August 25, 1856 at Mittelstrasse 167 (today No. 18). On October 1st, the same thing started operations with two boys. However, the voluntary income was soon insufficient to keep it going. So it was decided to sell the house on Mittelstrasse. Gloeckner, who had meanwhile moved to Halle , donated an area adjacent to the former property for the construction of the new "boy rescue house". This was located on Mauerstrasse (now Poststrasse, today Fleischerstrasse 17). The dilapidated buildings on it were demolished and on July 31, 1874 the foundation stone for the construction was ceremoniously laid. Gloeckner did not live to see the inauguration of the building on July 31, 1875.

Gloecknerstift

Due to the new building there was a debt of 10,000 Thalers on the building. An improvement in the debt situation was achieved through a legacy of Gloeckner, who died on February 22, 1885 in Dresden . A sale of the unsuitable piece of land brought another improvement in the financial situation in 1894 and structural changes were made to the house. On April 1, 1911, the "rescue house" was renamed the Gloecknerstift to honor the founder. Today the Gloecknerstift is a youth meeting and accommodation center of the Christian Association of Young People (YMCA) in Wittenberg.

Awards

  • "In grateful recognition of his work, which he devoted to the service of the city and its affairs with great zeal during the time he was in office here," the city of Wittenberg awarded Eduard Feodor Gloeckner honorary citizenship on November 3, 1874 . A cast iron memorial plaque is located at today's Gloecknerstift in Fleischerstrasse 17.
  • Gloecknerstraße in Wittenberg was named after the founder of the former boy rescue center.
