Eduard JN Looijenga (* 1948 ) is a Dutch mathematician who deals with algebraic geometry, especially singularity theory (also in differential topology).

Looijenga studied mathematics from 1965 at the University of Amsterdam with a diploma in 1971. After that he was at IHES until 1973 . In 1974 he received his doctorate under Nicolaas Kuiper at the University of Amsterdam ( Structural stability of smooth families of functions ). As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of Liverpool and from 1975 professor at Radboud University Nijmegen . In 1987 he became professor in Amsterdam and in 1991 at Utrecht University .

In 1990 he was visiting professor at the University of Michigan and in 1991 at the University of Utah . He was visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study (1987), several times at IHES, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research , the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute , the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, the Mittag-Leffler Institute , the University of Bonn, Columbia University, Yale University and Tsinghua University.

In 1978 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Helsinki ( Homogeneous spaces associated to certain semi-universal deformations ).

He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1995) and a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society since 2012 . From 2001 to 2004 he was head of the Dutch Mathematical Society.
