Eduard Magnus Jakobson (born February 5, 1847 in Torma , † July 2, 1903 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian artist, xylograph and Baptist missionary .

Life

Eduard Magnus Jakobson was born in Torma in Central Estonia. His father, the Estonian nationally minded music teacher Adam Jakobson (1817–1857), died when Eduard Magnus was ten years old. In 1862 Eduard Magnus Jakobson moved to Jamburg with his brother Carl Robert Jakobson, who was five years older than him . From 1874 Eduard Magnus Jakobson studied xylography with August Daugell in Saint Petersburg .

In 1866 his first work appeared in the newspaper Eesti Postimees , and a year later the first book illustration. He became one of the first book illustrators in Estonia and Latvia , especially for folk and school books. He also designed the logo for the Sakala newspaper , which his brother launched in 1878. Eduard Magnus remained closely connected to his brother's national and educational work. In 1884 Eduard Magnus Jakobson moved to Riga and established a xylography institute there in 1888.

According to estimates by the Estonian artist Aleksander Tassa , Eduard Magnus Jakobson left around 2,500 woodcuts. Other researchers assume twice that number.

Eduard Magnus Jakobson was also one of the masterminds of the Baptist churches in Estonia. He was originally a Lutheran . From 1867, however, under the influence of his art teacher August Daugell, he turned to the Baptists, whose teachings he propagated in numerous articles and poems. In 1869 Eduard Magnus Jakobson was baptized as an adult in the Baptist congregation in Saint Petersburg . From 1881 to 1884 he worked for the British and Foreign Bible Society . From 1895 until his death he worked as a Baptist preacher in Tallinn and Pärnu .
