Eduard Schlegel (born July 22, 1787 in Isny im Allgäu , † September 17, 1830 in Isny) was a German entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Life

Schlegel was the son of the linen manufacturer and silk wholesaler Leonhard Schlegel, who had made it from poor circumstances to prosperity and who supported the poor in the Free Imperial City of Isny with financial donations.

After his father retired in Naples in 1811 , Eduard Schlegel took over the business at the age of 24. He also continued the poor relief that his father had started through foundations and donations. During the famine of 1816–1817 , each poor person and each child of one poor person received a three-pound loaf of bread per week, a total of 150 loaves per week.

In October 1823 Schlegel traveled to Naples with his sister to visit his father. In April 1824 both returned safe and sound, which Schlegel's friend Christian E. Schönnamsgruber celebrated with a three-page poem that is available in print.

After the death of his father Leonhard in 1824, Eduard Schlegel set up a Protestant elementary school in his house on Isnyer Wassertorstrasse in 1825, the teacher of which he paid himself. In his will, he donated 10,000 guilders to a foundation in memory of his father, the interest of which was to be used for teachers' salaries. At that time, the amount corresponded to the value of around 10 to 20 town houses in Isny.

He died in 1830 at the age of 43. An entry in the pastor's chronicle proves the affection he was shown: “The whole city lamented his death”. A funerary speech by Schönnamsgruber and a funeral poem by relatives were published in print and have survived.

Aftermath

In the occasional poem published for his funeral, Schlegel is promised long fame: "For many years to come, his fame and praise will pass from mouth to mouth within Isny's walls, and posterity will see noble fruits ripen from his works!" .

Schlegel's school foundation actually played an important role in Protestant schooling in Isny for decades. In 1901, the salaries of Protestant elementary teachers were mainly covered by them.

The special school Isny, founded in 1935 as an auxiliary school, was named Eduard Schlegel School in 1992 as the first Isny school to be given its own name, in Schlegel's honor .
