Eduard Wladimirowitsch Schpolski ( Russian Эдуард Владимирович Шпольский , scientific transliteration Ėduard Vladimirovič Špol'skij ; * September 11th July / September 23rd  1892 greg. In Voronezh ; † August 21, 1975 in Moscow ) was a Russian physicist in the field the molecular spectroscopy worked.

Life

Schpolski studied from 1910 at the physical-mathematical faculty of the Lomonossow University in Moscow . In 1913 he started at the Municipal Moscow Schanjawski -Volksuniversität with scientific work that was interrupted by the First World War. After the end of the war he worked at the Institute for Physics and Biophysics until 1930 and then moved to Lomonossow University. From 1932 he taught at the Moscow State Pedagogical University , where he received his doctorate in 1933 ( Russian doctorate ). Since 1934 he was a professor.

Schpolski worked in the field of molecular spectroscopy and especially for photoluminescence spectroscopy of organic molecules. For a particular class of molecules for aromatic hydrocarbon molecules , he discovered the possibility narrow fluorescence lines at low temperatures in frozen solutions to obtain ( Schpolski effect , engl. Shpolski effect ).

In 1918 he founded the magazine Uspekhi Fizicheskikh Nauk (English, Russian Успехи физических наук Uspechi fisitscheskich nauk ) with SI Wawilow and PP Lasarew , whose editor-in-chief he later became and in which he published many scientific articles. He held the position of editor-in-chief until his death in 1975. Schpolski also had several other functions. From 1954 to 1972 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine Physik ( Russian Реферативный журнал Физика Referatiwny schurnal fisika ) published by WINITI .

In 1961 he was awarded the S. I. Vawilow gold medal by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . He was the recipient of the State Prize of the USSR .

Schpolski became known in German-speaking countries for his two-volume textbook on atomic physics, which has been published in a large number of editions since 1954. This standard work has been translated from Russian into several other languages.
