The Moscow State University of Education ( MPGU abbreviated from Russian : Московский педагогический государственный университет, МПГУ ) is a pedagogical university in Moscow , which was founded in 1872 as a higher school for women. From 1918 to 1930 it was called the Second Moscow University (the first was Lomonosov University ).

The Moscow State Pedagogical University is the oldest pedagogical university in Russia and took first place among pedagogical and linguistic universities in a ranking by the Ministry of Education in 2005 .

The university has over 15,000 students, including around 800 foreigners and around 2,000 doctoral students in 18 faculties and 104 chairs, and a library with around 2 million books.
