Edward Ashod Tiryakian

Edward Ashod Tiryakian ( Armenian Էդվարդ Աշոտ Թիրյաքյան , born August 6, 1929 in Bronxville ) is an American sociologist and professor emeritus from Duke University .

Tiryakian passed his bachelor's degree with honors at Princeton University in 1952 , his master's degree in sociology from Harvard University in 1954 , where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1956. PhD . His academic teachers were Talcott Parsons and Pitirim Sorokin .

From 1956 to 1962 Tiryakian was a lecturer at Princeton University and from 1962 to 1965 at Harvard University. In 1965 he became an Associate Professor at Duke University in 1967, Full Professor. From 1969 to 1972 he was chairman of the department for sociology and anthropology there . He retired in 2004. He then continued teaching, including at the University of South Carolina .

His main research interests were the sociology of religion , globalization , the sociology of disasters and the history of sociology .
