Edward Baines the Elder
Edward Baines the Elder (born February 5, 1774 in Ripon in Yorkshire or in Walton-le-Dale near Preston , Lancashire , † August 3, 1848 ) was an English publicist and Member of Parliament.
Life
Baines was the second son of Richard Baines and his wife Jane (nee Chew). From the age of 2 he grew up with his uncle Thomas Riggs. At the age of 8 he started grammar school in Preston and lived with his parents again. Baine's career went from being a mere printing assistant to the owner and editor of the Leeds Mercury . As one of the main representatives of liberalism in northern England, Baines also made a name for himself politically. Between 1833 and 1841 he represented the Leeds district in the House of Commons as an important leader of the Protestant Dissenters .
He was married to Charlotte of Leeds, daughter of Matthew Talbot, since 1798. The couple had eleven children, one of whom was the future journalist Edward Baines the Younger (1800–1890). Her eldest son, Thomas Talbot Baines, became a lawyer.
