Edward Bury

Edward Bury (born September 18, 1919 in Gniezno , † February 13, 1995 in Krakow ) was a Polish composer, conductor, pianist and music teacher.

From 1937 to 1944, Bury studied composition with Kazimierz Sikorski , conducting with Walerian Bierdiajew and piano with Zbigniew Drzewiecki at the Warsaw Conservatory . From 1945 to 1954 he taught at the State Music Academy in Cracow, where he had been a professor since 1952. He was also the conductor of the Pomeranian Symphony Orchestra from 1949 to 1952. In 1957 he studied the interpretation of French music with Ernest Ansermet (in particular Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy ). In Cracow in particular, he conducted the premieres of several works by Polish composers.

In 1961 he received the Ministry of National Defense Art Prize for his First Symphony. For Modlitwę o pokój he received the silver medal of the pontificate of Pope Paul VI in 1968 . With Treny warszawskie , he won a 1975 national composer competition in Krakow. In 1976 he received the special prize of the Polish episcopate for his Msza ekumeniczna . In 1975 he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta .
