Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon

Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon , (born February 18, 1609 in Dinton near Salisbury , † December 9, 1674 in Rouen ) was an English statesman and historian.

During the English Civil War , Clarendon sided with the royalists. In 1643 he became a member of the Privy Council of the Crown Prince, later Charles II of England. After the execution of Charles I in 1649 led Hyde, the government in exile of Charles II as this 1660 returned from exile, Hyde was first to. Chancellor of the Exchequer , then to the Lord Chancellor appointed and certain British policy during the first years of the Stuart - Restoration much with. There were sharp disputes with parliament when he wanted to restrict its right to control state finances and advised the king to dissolve the lower house. In 1667 Hyde was charged with high treason and fled to France. He devoted the last years of his life to writing historical works. His main work is considered the most important contemporary source on the English Civil War.

Edward Hyde had been married to Frances (1617–1667), daughter of Sir Thomas Aylesbury, 1st Baronet, since 1634, with whom he had the following children:

• Henry (1638-1709), 2nd Earl of Clarendon
• Laurence (1642-1711), 1st Earl of Rochester
