Lady Anne Hyde (born March 12, 1637 in Cranbourne Lodge in the Great Park of Windsor , Berkshire , England , † March 31, 1671 in St James's Palace in London ) was the first wife of Jacob Stuart, the Duke of York , fourteen years after her death as James II. King of England and James VII. King of Scotland.

Life

Anne Hyde was the eldest daughter of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon (1608–1674) and his second wife, Lady Frances Aylesbury (1617–1667). At the time of King Charles I of England, she went into exile with her parents and three siblings. The family then took up residence in Antwerp . Lady Anne became a lady-in-waiting to Princess Maria of Orange . At the end of the 1650s, Jacob Stuart, who was also in exile, courted the handsome Anne, who insisted on a marriage promise before starting a liaison. Allegedly they married in secret on November 24, 1659 in Breda , the Netherlands , but in any case concluded a secret contract about their future marriage. After Jakob returned to England in May 1660 with his older brother Charles II, who had meanwhile advanced to be king, he no longer wanted to hear about his marriage promise, but finally had to keep his promise under pressure from Anne's father and his royal brother. The official wedding of Jakob Stuart and the already heavily pregnant Anne Hyde took place on September 3, 1660 in London. The marriage of the Duke and Duke of York was marked by little affection, and Lady Anne suffered from her husband's many infidelities. In later years she sought solace in lavish food and became quite stout. She died in 1671 at the age of only 34. She found her final resting place in Henry VII's Chapel at Westminster.

progeny

Lady Anne and Jakob had eight children together, of which only the two older daughters reached adulthood:
