Sir Peter Lely (actually Pieter van der Faes , born September 14, 1618 in Soest , Westphalia , † November 30, 1680 in London ) was an English painter of Dutch origin.

Life

At the age of 19 Lely became a pupil of Pieter de Grebber in Haarlem in 1637 . With the guarantee of his teacher de Grebber, he was also able to join the Guild of Luke .

In 1643 Lely went to England and in 1647 settled in London . Soon he was being talked about everywhere, as his portraits were entirely in the style of Anthony van Dyck . Since van Dyck had died a few years ago, Lely closed a large gap with his pictures. This is probably why Lely was offered membership of the time-honored Company of Painter Stainers .

Over time, Lely, along with William Dobson , became one of the leading portraitists of the English Revolution under Oliver Cromwell and subsequent rulers. In 1651 Lely applied for various murals in Whitehall .

Ten years later, King Charles II appointed Lely to be his official court painter . A year later, in 1662, Lely was granted British citizenship. Between 1666 and 1667, Lely created a series of portraits of various court ladies for Anne Hyde ; still known today under the title The Windsor Beauties . Another series of portraits of admirals, The Flagmen , was created almost at the same time .

On January 11, 1680, Lely was personally beaten by King Charles II to Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). Sir Peter Lely died just one year later at the age of 62.

After his phase, which was strongly influenced by Dutch, Lely came to a relaxed, free painting technique in old age. In addition to many of Lely's students, Nicolas de Largillière should be mentioned here as a representative .
