Edward Leigh
Sir Edward Julian Egerton Leigh (* 20 July 1950 in Kensington ) is a British politician of the Conservative Party . He has been a member of the House of Commons for the Gainsborough constituency since 1983 .
Leigh attended the Lycée français in London and Durham University . In June 1983 he was first elected to the House of Commons . From 2001 to 2010 he was Chairman of the Audit Committee . In the election for Speaker of the House of Commons 2019 , he applied to succeed the speaker John Bercow , who resigned in October 2019 , but lost in the first ballot with only 12 of 562 votes cast.
Leigh is married to Mary Leigh, b. Goodman, a great niece of Georg, Duke of Mecklenburg . Leigh has three sons and three daughters.
